Private vs Group Reformer Pilates

Three formats, three very different experiences. How to choose the one that matches your body and your budget.

Almost every reformer studio in Dubai offers three formats: private (one instructor, one client), semi-private (one instructor, two to four clients), and group (one instructor, eight to twelve clients). They all use the same machine. The experience is completely different.

Private (1:1)

One instructor. One client. The whole session is built around your body, your goals, and the exercises you actually need. The instructor watches every rep and corrects form in real time.

Best for

  • Complete beginners in their first three to five sessions.
  • Injury recovery, chronic pain, or a specific medical condition.
  • Pregnancy and postnatal training.
  • Anyone with a specific performance goal (a marathon, a sport, a return from surgery).
  • Clients who want the fastest possible progress.

Trade-offs

Most expensive per session — typically AED 280–500 in Dubai. Requires scheduling around one instructor's availability. Some clients find one-on-one attention intense; for others it's exactly the reason it works.

Semi-private (2–4 clients)

One instructor, two to four clients, each on their own reformer. The instructor moves between machines, correcting form and adjusting exercises. In a studio built around this format — four machines, one instructor — semi-private gives you close to the quality of a private with a fraction of the cost.

Best for

  • Beginners who have completed one to two private intro sessions.
  • Intermediate clients who want ongoing form correction without paying private prices.
  • Anyone who prefers training with one or two others rather than alone or in a crowd.
  • Clients who want consistent progress but not one-on-one intensity.

Trade-offs

Slightly less attention than a private, but in a well-designed studio the difference is small. Priced between AED 200–320 in Dubai — the best value in the market for most clients.

Group (8–12 clients)

One instructor, eight to twelve reformers, choreographed class. High energy, playlist-driven, social. The instructor cues from the front of the room — real-time correction is limited to the two or three people they can see clearly at once.

Best for

  • Experienced reformer clients who already know their form.
  • People who train better in a group setting and don't need close correction.
  • Clients on a tighter budget — AED 130–180 per class in Dubai.
  • Anyone who wants to fit Pilates into a busy week with flexible drop-in booking.

Trade-offs

Form correction is minimal. Beginners often develop compensation patterns that are hard to un-learn later. Class pace is set by the room, not by you. If the instructor is teaching to twelve machines, they cannot teach to yours.

The honest recommendation

If you're new to reformer, start with a private intro session — even if you plan to move to group classes afterwards. It shortens your learning curve by weeks and prevents form issues that take months to correct.

For ongoing training, semi-private is the sweet spot for the vast majority of clients. You get most of the benefit of a private for close to group pricing. It's why we built The Form Edit around four machines rather than twelve.

Group works well as a supplement — a third weekly session on top of two semi-privates, for example — once your form is solid. As a starting point, it's the slowest path to real results.

Start with an intro session

The Form Edit in Nad Al Sheba offers a 60-minute private intro session for all new clients — posture assessment, machine orientation, and a first workout. From there we build a plan that fits your goals, schedule, and budget.
